What kind of vehicle is the 2025 GMC Sierra EV? What does it compare to?
The GMC Sierra EV is a fully electric full-size pickup truck, the equivalent to the GMC Sierra 1500 gasoline and diesel pickup lines that are covered separately. The 2025 GMC Sierra EV applies GM’s suite of battery and propulsion technologies, formerly known as Ultium, to the full-size truck realm. It’s closely related to the GMC Hummer EV pickup but conceived on a different track intended to appeal—and literally measure up—to other full-size trucks. The Sierra EV is nearly identical to the Chevy Silverado EV, and other rivals include the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.
Is the 2025 GMC Sierra EV a good truck?
Better than good. The GMC Sierra EV is a super-capable, strong-performing, all-electric truck that offers some impressive tech aiding flexibility and maneuverability. But it’s very expensive. The Sierra EV earns a TCC Rating of 8.4 out of 10 for a comprehensive slate of positives including a brawny powertrain, trend-setting range, good maneuverability, a versatile layout, and a lengthy feature set. Provided you’re alright with looks much like those of the gas and diesel trucks, and a six-figure price tag, it’s a great pick. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What’s new for the 2025 GMC Sierra EV?
The Sierra EV was delivered in relatively small numbers, only in its top Denali trim, for 2024. Now it’s back for 2025 with a few incremental efficiency improvements, a slightly higher price, and news of somewhat more affordable Elevation and AT4 models arriving in calendar year 2025—although it’s not yet confirmed from GMC whether those will be for the 2025 or 2026 model year.
The Sierra EV is built on the same battery-electric architecture that underpins the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV and is also due to be the basis for the upcoming Cadillac Escalade IQ. The GMC Sierra EV and GM’s other EV trucks use a construction that tucks the battery inside frame rails.
Although it looks much like a traditional Sierra pickup, the design stands out beside one of those fossil-fuel swillers. There’s no gap between the cargo box and cab. Unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning, the 2025 GMC Sierra was designed as a dedicated EV with no allowance for a combustion engine. That means it’s exceptionally roomy inside and out, and its combination of plush leather upholstery plus the amazing versatility of GM’s Midgate arrangement here makes it a pickup cabin like no other. Flip up the rear seats and you have additional storage space; lower the Midgate and you can use that space as an expansion of the bed space—for items nearly 11 feet long with a load step that flips around as a bed extender.
The 2025 GMC Sierra EV delivers up to 760 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque via two permanent-magnet electric motors. Drive systems draw energy from massive battery packs, feeding energy back upon deceleration, through a choice of two one-pedal driving modes, to improve the efficiency of these stout electric trucks.
The GMC Sierra EV blasts from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, without the graphic gimmickry of Wide Open Watts in the closely related Chevy Silverado EV or Watts To Freedom in the GMC Hummer EV.
The Sierra EV provides a somewhat more mature, sophisticated experience, with less bluster than GM’s other electric trucks. It includes an air suspension, as well as rear-wheel steering that permits incredible maneuverability, given this model’s 233-inch length—as well as CrabWalk maneuvers, if you want to have a little fun.
The battery packs themselves are the key differences between Extended Range (170-kwh, 390-mile) and Max Range (205-kwh, 460-mile) versions of the Sierra EV, although the horsepower rating of the former is a bit lower. Both battery packs have double layers of lithium-ion pouch cells, arranged into modules, and the layers can be switched from parallel to series at road-trip charging stops to take advantage of 800-volt DC fast-charging. That allows these packs to regain 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
The Sierra EV is different enough that none of the gas or diesel Sierra safety ratings apply here. Sierra EV models come with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, automatic headlights, and active lane control, plus camera views and additional driver aids to help with outward vision in such a tall vehicle. GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance also helps ease highway driving, provided you stay focused on the road ahead—and it will even help when towing.
How much does the 2025 GMC Sierra EV cost?
The 2025 GMC Sierra EV costs $91,995, including the $2,095 destination fee, in its most affordable Sierra EV Denali form with the Extended Range battery pack. That includes adaptive dampers, air suspension, rear-wheel steering, a 16.8-inch infotainment system, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, open-pore wood trim, quilted leather front seats, a Bose sound system, and much more.
