The Bronco Sport can handle highways and trails, no problem, thanks to its choice of turbocharged 3- and 4- cylinder engines. We award a point for its interstate performance for a 6 here.
It’s not especially impressive but it gets the job done. The 181 hp 1.5-liter turbo-3, found in base trims, is adequate. With 190 lb-ft of torque, it deftly handles the delicate balance of efficiency and acceleration, and the 8-speed automatic transmission is a partner in that chore, if a reluctant one, at times.
The Badlands model gets the same 8-speed auto and a 2.0-liter turbo-4, rated for 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, though premium fuel pushes those numbers to 250 hp and 277 lb-ft. It’s good for controlled lines over rocky landscapes or kicking up the dust through the flats.
Is the Ford Bronco Sport 4WD?
Yes, all-wheel drive comes standard, though there are a couple different systems.
Most Bronco Sport models, those powered by the turbo-3, feature a relatively simple AWD system with a basic front-rear power split and five selectable driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Sand, and Slippery. Turbo-4 Bronco Sports get a more advanced system with a twin-clutch rear differential capable of diverting torque to either rear wheel as needed, as well as drive modes for Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl.
The Bronco Sport Badlands features 7.9 inches of ground clearance and 17.7 inches of fording depth. While this falls short of the big Bronco, it beats most other compact SUVs. It also features monotone rear shocks, softer springs, tuned front struts, hill descent control, and a front-facing camera that shows obstacles in some drive modes. Opting for the 29.5-inch all-terrain tires increases the ground clearance up to 8.8 inches and the fording depth to 23.6 inches, and the available skid plates are a smart choice.
The Bronco Sport provides a compliant ride and deft steering feedback on pavement, though plenty of road noise transmits through the cabin. Turbo-3 models offer up to 2,000 pounds of towing capacity, and turbo-4 versions max out at 2,200 pounds.
