What kind of car is the 2024 Mazda 3? What does it compare to?

The 2024 Mazda 3, available in sedan or hatchback styles, is a compact car competing with the likes of the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla.

Is the 2024 Mazda 3 a good car?

Sophisticated looks, engaging driving dynamics, and good crash-test results offset the Mazda 3’s awkward infotainment and middling fuel economy for a TCC Rating of 6.3 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.)

What’s new for the 2024 Mazda 3?

For 2024, Mazda revises the trim lineup, most notably making all-wheel drive standard on certain grades and no longer optional on others. There’s also a new Carbon Turbo edition with exclusive exterior styling, and a new 10.3-inch display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on the options menu.

The base Mazda 3 gets a 2.5-liter inline-4 with 191 hp and a standard 6-speed automatic transmission. Power delivery is strong and consistent, though lots of engine noise transmits to the cabin. The optional 250-hp turbo-4 is a better fit, particularly for the hatchback model, good for a sub-six-second run to 60 mph. Good steering feedback and sharp handling remain the hallmarks, and one configuration still offers a six-speed manual transmission.

With balanced proportions exemplified by elegant curves and a long nose, the Mazda 3 sedan shows the compact class’ best capabilities. The hatchback takes on a binary look courtesy of its solid rear and pounce-ready stance. Regardless of body style, though, the Mazda 3 has an aesthetically pleasing interior that punches above its weight.

You’ll engage your core climbing in and out, but once seated, you’ll find plenty of support and adjustments, plus available leather, heating, and cooling on upper trims. The back row is less versatile but can accommodate two adults if necessary.

The Mazda 3, in both body styles, earns good marks from the NHTSA and the IIHS. Mazda includes automatic emergency braking, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.

How much does the 2024 Mazda 3 cost?

The base Mazda 3 S sedan costs $25,355, including a $1,165 destination fee. Standard features include cloth upholstery, an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 16-inch wheels. This trim is not available as a hatchback.

Of the Select Sport, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Carbon Turbo, and Turbo Premium Plus models, the Carbon Turbo’s performance stands out but its $32,915 starting price is a bit high. The $27,355 2.5 S Preferred presents the best value with its heated front seats, power-adjustable driver seat, and power sunroof. The Mazda 3 Turbo Premium Plus hatch tops the lineup with standard AWD for $37,815.
