This 1955 Plymouth Belvedere four-door sedan was sold new in Kansas and remained with its first owner until 1978. It subsequently spent time in collections and earned an AACA National First Prize in 2004 before it was purchased by the seller in May 2024. The car is finished in two-tone blue and white over teal vinyl with green inserts, and power comes from a 259ci V8 paired with a two-speed automatic transmission. Features include wheel covers, whitewall tires, dual side-view mirrors, and an AM radio. Now showing 14k miles, this P27 Belvedere is offered at no reserve with AACA correspondence, copies of superseded titles, ownership history compiled by the seller, and a Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.
The Belvedere became Plymouth’s range-topping model in 1954, and it was redesigned for 1955 with Forward Look styling by Virgil Exner. A total of 160,984 Belvedere four-door sedans were produced for the 1955 model year. This example was delivered from the factory in Tampa Turquoise and Sarasota Sand, and it features chrome bumpers with overriders, a hood ornament, an antenna, PowerFlite badging, and a turned-down exhaust tip.
The 15″ steel wheels wear chrome covers, and they are mounted with BFGoodrich Silvertown whitewall tires. A spare wheel and tire are stowed in the trunk. The Belvedere rode on a 115″ wheelbase for 1955 and featured a coil-sprung independent front suspension and a live rear axle with leaf springs. Stopping power is provided by hydraulic drums at all four corners.
The cabin features front and rear bench seating trimmed in teal vinyl with green cloth inserts along with matching door panels. Green carpets line the floors, and additional equipment includes an AM radio and a locking glovebox positioned in the center of the dash. Faded areas and missing piping on the seats can be seen in the photo gallery below along with holes and stains on the headliner.
The two-spoke steering wheel has a chrome horn ring, and it fronts a 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 14k miles, approximately 200 of which were added under the seller’s ownership.
The 259ci Hy-Fire V8 features five main bearings and a Carter two-barrel carburetor. Output was factory rated at 167 horsepower. The intake manifold and the radiator top were refinished under previous ownership, and an oil change was performed in May 2024.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a PowerFlite two-speed automatic transmission.
The AACA National First Prize plaque and correspondence are presented above, and superseded titles are shown in the gallery along with an ownership history compiled by the seller.
The Pennsylvania title carries an “Antique Vehicle” brand, and the seller notes that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation introduced a typo when noting the odometer reading (12,580 miles instead of 13,580).
