HEMMINGS ● 800-227-4373 X 79550 ● HEMMINGS.COM/STORE ● $114.99

The model experts at AutoWorld have given their 1:18-scale 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee (item AMM1315) casting a vibrant new lease on life by rendering it in eye-popping FY1-code Top Banana yellow paint, accented with Rallye wheels, black sport stripes, and Super Bee decals. Under the car’s coveted N96 Air Grabber hood is a wonderfully detailed, triple-two-barrel-carbureted 440 Six Pack V-8 engine. Lifting the wing-topped trunk lid reveals a lifelike trunk mat and Goodyear-shod spare wheel. Open the doors and take in the realistic woodgrain dash trimmings, Pistol-Grip four-speed shifter, delicate fabric seatbelts, and the Tuff steering wheel that turns the front wheels. Even the undercarriage of this rendition of the low-production (fewer than 4,200 built), one-year-only Charger Super Bee features accurate, factory-style overspray. This collectible is sure to entice fans of ’70s Mopar muscle.

“Bullitt” Fender Gripper available From Summit Racing Equipment

SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT ● 888-501-9619 ● SUMMITRACING.COM ● $25.57

It’s all too easy to inadvertently scratch, dent, or otherwise damage your front fenders as you lean over them to work in the engine bay of your muscle machine. A shop towel tossed over the paint may provide a thin barrier but could easily slide off and leave the sheetmetal exposed. A better way to protect your vulnerable fenders is to use a Fender Gripper (item OYL-FG2128). It’s a padded cover, sized 34 x 22 inches, with foam backing material and vinyl facing, that will gently cling to your paint and can support tools laid on top. It promises to stand up to harsh fluids including oil, coolant, and brake fluid, and this version sports Ford’s iconic “BULLITT” logotype that celebrates three generations of Hollywood movie inspired, special-edition Mustangs. Numerous other logos are available, so you’ll definitely find one to suit your automotive proclivities.

“Trophies And Scars” By Ray Evernham

OCTANE PRESS ● 512-761-4555 ● OCTANEPRESS.COM ● $34.95

Running a race team requires a superhuman level of effort, focus, and dedication, which Ray Evernham, now a NASCAR Hall of Famer, was already practicing when he was racing stock cars in New Jersey during the ’70s. Evernham has since gone on to a speed-of-light existence that gained him equal acclaim as a championship-winning crew chief and winning team owner. As a result, he hasn’t had much time to talk about his life, or his accomplishments, until he sat down with New York Times best-selling author Joe Garner to craft this rich, 338-page biography. The author has clearly made up for lost time with the book, because the narrative is to the point, with nothing in the way of fluff, and impressive honesty about both racing and life. The title is absolutely what’s contained in the confines of its pages, and a few people’s balloons get popped along the way. What’s most impressive in this book is that the text makes clear, over and over again, that success in racing at any level requires maximum concentration and a willingness to innovate. Evernham is one of racing’s great recent pioneers in that regard. Because of his lifestyle, he’s not an easy guy to get to know. Read this book, and you will come to understand this highly successful overachiever, and what made him that way. Jim Donnelly
