This Retro 1986 Porsche 911 Targa could be the coolest Porsche to be present at this year’s Monterey Car Week.
The rainbow covered Porsche is the product of a restoration by bb-Auto, a German firm that joined forces with Galpin Motors to introduce its restored creations to the North American market.
The restoration shop has been breathing new life into air-cooled Porsches well before establishing its relationship with Galpin Motors earlier this year. The company was founded by Rainer Buchmann and Kathrin Buchmann in 1974. It’s first vehicle reveal was a modified Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, transformed into a Targa and finished in the same rainbow colors as Polaroid.
BB-Auto’s latest build is more than an eye-catching combination of purple, pink, orange, yellow, green and blue over a contrasting black background. The real treasure is hidden until the giant whale tail: an air-cooled 4.0-liter flat-six from Ed Pink Racing that pumps out 400 horsepower to the rear wheels. The power gets another bump in the right direction with assistance from a 110-kilowatt electric motor from Vonnen, the company known for making the first ever 911 hybrid streetcar. Together, the electric motor and flat-six engine offer 550 horsepower for an even more exhilarating driving experience.
Adding to the excitement is a G50 five-speed manual gearbox, bespoke “997 GT3-style” suspension geometry featuring coilovers and adjustable sway bars, and custom six-piston Brembo brakes behind two-piece Fuchs style wheels wrapped in Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires.
If the Porsche’s funky rainbow design is giving you flashbacks, you may have seen the older version, also built by bb-Auto, which first appeared in 1976 on a Turbo Targa sporting the Polaroid colors for that year’s Photokina photography show. The “Polaroid Porsche” appeared on several magazine covers, including Auto Motor und Sport and Road & Track.
The hybrid sports car’s plush interior matches the exterior to a “T,” from the carpets to the dashboard. Modern creature comforts such as power seats, custom gauges, and electric air conditioning were added.
“This project is a true labor of love, blending classic Porsche heritage with our own Galpizined style,” Galpin Motors CEO Beau Boeckmann said. “Honoring the iconic bb-Auto company and continuing its legacy with our team was our mission.”
The bb-Auto Porsche Targa Hybrid is scheduled to make its public debut at the tenth annual Werks Reunion at the Monterey Pines Golf Course on Friday, August 16, during Monterey Car Week.
